Effect of quantum well states on topological insulators and other spin orbit coupling dominated systems

Topological insulators and giant Rashba semiconductors have surface states that are dominated by strong spin orbit coupling. Using optical techniques, as inelastic and resonant light scattering, the properties of such states and their dependence on doping and surface modifications will be investigated. In pervious studies on, e.g. Bi2Se3 and BiTeI, a resonant scattering process has been found that is related to quantum well states induced by band bending due to charge accumulation. The aim of the present thesis is to elucidate and better understand the related scattering processes on the surface of such materials and to give a foundation for possible applications of these materials in sensors and transport devices.
