Nanoplasmonics with low-dimensional plasmons
In this project we want to investigate the properties of collective plasmonic excitations in one- and two-dimensional metallic nanostructures such as atomic wires formed by Au, Al and Ag atoms on regularly stepped Si surfaces. These structures allow both energy conversion and confinement on the scale of few nanometers. Their properties will be investigated by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in combination with electron diffraction and tunneling microscopy. Variation of coupling efficiency will be tested both by nanostructuring the surface as well as by adsorption of appropriate molecules acting as nano-antennas.
